Can not install Reporting Services, Help!

Hi,
I'm running Windows XP and SQL Server Developer Edition (sp3) and I'm trying
to install the MS SQL Server Reporting Services that is in the MSDN of April
2004. I also have Visual studio.net installed.
So when I run the CD all goes well until you specify the database for the
reporting server and then I get the following error:
"This edition of the Report Server Database is not supported on the edition
of SQL Server 2000 you have chosen. Please choose on that matches the
requirements."
MS Requirements are SQL 2000 Standard, SQL 2000 Enterprise, and SQL 2000
Developer edition.
What does this mean, any comments or feedback will be greately appreciated.
- SergioI would verify that you are running the developer addition. You can do that
by running this SELECT statement on your XP machine:
SELECT SERVERPROPERTY ('edition')

How do I get this install to work as I have an application that requires SQL
desktop.
Thanks...
Read the readme files that come with MSDE. You can't just run the setup.exe
with no parameters an expect to install SQL Server exactly like you would
like it configured. MSDE a developer's tool so act like a developer and do
some investigative work before trying to install it.

|||Hi Jim,
Thanks for the put down. Most appreciated.
I am not a developer. I am simply a computer user trying to use a program
that requires MSDE. And, I did not think that MSDE was a developer tool,
but simply a db engine that apps could plug into. But clearly you know more
than I.
And, with a little research by this end user I switched on no back out so I
could read the install log, and I supplied the setup.ini file with the
following:
BLANKSAPWD=1
SQLSecurityMode=SQL
By stopping the back out I now have SQL server running. but can not install
ODB connectivity drivers. ODBC 2.8 install was attempted in safemode.
Thanks Jim,...
Looking forward to your next put down.
BTW, I was directed to this forum by MS support as the place to receive help.

If MSDE is running then MDAC (and the ODBC drivers) must already be
installed - SQL Server can't run without it.
I find it surprising and disappointing that the application you are trying
to install, that requires MSDE, does not make the installation of MSDE
seamless to you. What is the name of the program you are trying to install?

Hi Jim,
Thank you. We’ll start fresh. Here’s the deal.
OS= WinXPpro.
App=ACT! 2005 (version7)
And yes, I have gone around and around with BEST software (makers of ACT!)
about the need to support the install of SQL MSDE. They claim that it is a
MS problem. However, I have used this install of XP for 2 or 3 yrs with
hardly a BSOD or any other problem. 70 or 80 programs run just fine. (Of
course not all at once). FYI ACT! Is a contact manager. I have been using
v6 with a great deal of success. However, v7 is a total rewrite and uses
SQL. It is essentially version one. I don’t know that I want to trust my
data to a program that is such a problem to install, and relies on some
else’s db engine.
On to the problem:
I could only get MSDE up and running when I switched on don’t back out on
failure:
setup.exe DISABLEROLLBACK=1
I did this based on a clue that the last line in the SQL error log was:
SQL Server is terminating due to a ‘stop’ request from Service Control
Manager.
My thought was that if it can be stopped it must be running. Lo and behold
on reboot the little computer icon is in the system tray. And Task list
shows SQL server running, and sqlmangr running.
However, the drivers tab in ODBC do NOT show SQL Server. And, when I
attempt to install MDAC v2.8 it bombs out.
Part of my problem is that I don’t under stand the functional relationships
between all these elements. My thought is that SQL MSDE is the db engine,
and that MDAC drivers in the ODBC are essentally middle ware allowing the
application to access the db.
Before SQL was running, when I last attempted to install ACT! v7 the error
out was 1603 can not configure server. I have not tried to reinstall yet
wanting to get as many ducks in a row as possible.
Looking forward to your post.
Thanks

|||You're correct MSDE is the database engine, MDAC is the communication layer
between the application and the database.
The DISABLEROLLBACK option is an option for the Windows installer to not
rollback any changes to your system if the installation fails. The original
error your received, 1603, is basically a general error reporting back that
the MSDE installation failed.
It seem to me that although MSDE is apparently running, the installation is
in an inconsistent state. What I would recommend is completely unistalling
MSDE. The following link is to a KB article for manually removing MSDE from
your system.
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;320873
On your system go to Control Panel | Add Remove Program and see if there is
an entry for removing MSDE (it may be referenced as SQL Server). If you find
it then uninstall it. If that is successful then continue with the Remove
Files and Folders part of the KB article and finish the rest of the steps on
the article, removing registry entries.
If this is all successful then you have a system that is cleaned of MSDE.
Next I would try installing MDAC 2.8 and see if you get through that
successfully. If you don't then I would not attempt to install MSDE, since I
doubt it will succeed.
Next reinstall MSDE by running setup.exe with the following command line
parameters. You could use an .ini file for the SECURITYMODE or BLANKSAPWD
options if you want. Personally, I find using the command line easier.
/Lv c:\MSDEsetup.log SECURITYMODE="SQL" BLANKSAPWD=1
This will install a default instance of MSDE to the default directories
(c:\program files\Microsoft SQL Server) with a blank sa password.
If the install fails then you should have a verbose log on the root of drive
C. Post to this group the tail end of the log where the installation start
to break down; you'll see where there is first a failure and then rollbacks
of registry entries and files.
A lot embedded database application are moving their data storage over to
MSDE. It's a very powerful and reliable environment (once you get it
installed!). The problem is that SQL Server is much more complex of an
application to install than a simple flat file database or an Access based
solution. When the installation of MSDE goes sideways, recovering from it
can be quite a lot of trouble, as you've experienced.
Good luck - I hope you are able to get MSDE finally installed.

|||Hi Jim,
Well I see one error of my ways. I was installing MSDE first and then
attempting an install of MDAC 2.8.
If I understand you correctly after I remove everything I should start with
MDAC and then go on to installing MSDE.
I will try this, but it will have to wait for a day or two. The pressure of
work interfers with all the fun stuff ;-)
Thanks... I'll post results in a few days.

|||It wasn't an error to install MDAC after MSDE; I just thought it would be a
good test to make sure that your system is in good order first. All windows
versions since Windows 2000 come with MDAC preinstalled, but it is best to
upgrade to 2.8 before you start the MSDE installation.

OK, here is the latest:
re: KB 320873 - the Msizap.exe failed to find the SQL server to uninstall.
There was no SQL server in Add/Remove.
This in spite of the fact the icon was in the system tray, and I could call
up the control panel to start and stop the SQL server.
Soooooo... I stepped through the manual removal. And took out lots of SQL
keys that were in the registry, plus all the stuff that the KB article
suggested. Removed the temp files and the entire branch of SQL server in the
directory structure.
I also ran Registry First Aid and did a general clean up of the registry.
I then ran the MDACsetup and received the following:
MDAC 2.8 RTM is incompatible with this version of Windows. All of its
features are currently part of Windows.
There is a Details button that brought up nothing.
OK, so which is it... Incompatible with WinXP pro or already installed?
Hard to know from that error mess.
Forging ahead I ran the SQL setup with your (Jim’s) command line switches.
(See previous message.) That resulted in the same error as before... to wit:
Setup failed to configure the server. Refer to the error logs.
With the verbose log switched turned on the resultant log is 3.6 MB. I am
not going to post that (don’t think I could anyway.) There is a lot of note
1: 2360- stuff near the top, and then tons of opening and adding RegValues.
But here is the middle part. This is near the end of the install and a bit
into the rollback. It seems to vomit at (24!1C) at the config server
execution.
I am at a total loss as how to proceed.

Go to Control Panel | Adminstrative Tools | Services. If it is not running
then bring up the properties for the service, set the startup to automatic

can not install MSDE

Hi
I have installed .net framework 1.1 and .net web matrix from 'sams teach yourself asp.net' CD. I installed MSDE from the same CD, its not giving any error, but at the end it does not promt to restart the computer, even after restarting I can not see the MSDE icon in the system tray, also I dont see MSDE in the add/remove programs in control panel.I installed sql2kdesksp3.exe from www.asp.net/msde/, but the same thing repeats.

1. Shld I install the sql2kasp3.exe(Analysis services companents) and sql2ksp3.exe(Databasre components) also?

I am new to asp,It will be helpful if somebody can tell me how to install MSDE.

ThanksHere are step-by-step instructions. Try going over them again in case the machine didn't install it properly:

http://www.asp.net/webmatrix/guidedtour/Appendices/installMsde.aspx|||Hii

I Installed MSDE via command line as given in tht site and there was no error but dint get tht MSDE icon in system tray.
I tried to install MSDE via batch file, there was no error, but when started the MSDE service, I couldnt see the "MSSQLSERVER", there is only MSSQLServiceASHelper, when clicked on it it gives the error as

"could not start the MSSQLServerADHelper service on Local Computer
eror2:The system cannot find the file specified"

Now wht shld I do??Can I download the missing file separately.I installed from the cd again and the same repeated.plzz tell me whtt I shld do now.
Thank You|||Yeah, follow the directions here to reinstall:
http://www.asp.net/msde/default.aspx?tabindex=0&tabid=1|||Hi
I tried by installing from tht site, to install it again it takes another 8 to 10hours as I use dialup connection.Cant I download the missing file separately?|||The files you point to are Service Pack 3 files for SQL Server 2000. You need this file to patch MSDE with SP3: Sql2kdesksp3.exe

Check out the SQL Server and MSDE Service Pack 3a update page:
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/downloads/2000/SP3.asp

You may be able to order on CD, or at least download the correct file.|||Thanks a lot for answering me, I am downloading it again from the given site, if the same problem repeates then I'll buy the Cd.
Does SQL server 2000 and MSDE work the same way?

Thank you.|||Pretty much. MSDE doesn't have all the high-end features that SQL Server has, nor does it have a graphical interface designer like Query Analyzer or Enterprise Manager.

Can not install July CTP with June CTP already installed

I was thinking the installing July CTP upon June CTP is like installing a service pack, but the set up tells me the upgrade was blocked.

Any one has any idea how to install July CTP on a server with June CTP installed already?

Do I have to back up all the databases and uninstall June CTP and do a installation of July CTP from scratch and restored all the databases or is there a way of upgrading to July CTP?

Any comments and inputs are highly appreciated.

Bo

Hi Bo,

We are currently not supporting a direct upgrade between the two CTPs. You should however be able to backup your database, uninstall the June CTP, install the July CTP and then attach your database. This should be the easiest route between the two CTPs.

Thank you,

It worked for me, though it seems a little bit tedious.

Thanks a lot for your advice, Elisa.

Can not install - workstation components on Longhorn x86 or x64

Is Katmai supported on Longhorn? I tried both x64 and x86 (development edition) on Longhorn x64 and x86 versions respectively. The workstation components get errors and rolled back. Any fix?

I want to try Lognhorn, Katmai, Orcas, Biztalk R2 (on 32-bit platform first) and then x64. Can someone recommend what stacks are tried/supported ?

But I can answer the latter: it does not run on Win2000. I've tried. I guess that if you want to run Katmai on Longhorn, that you will have to wait for a later CTP. -- Erland Sommarskog, SQL Server MVP, esquel@.sommarskog.se Books Online for SQL Server 2005 at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/downloads/books.mspx Books Online for SQL Server 2000 at http://www.microsoft.com/sql/prodinfo/previousversions/books.mspx|||

Actually, I postponed x64 tests.

On x86 Longhorn (w2k8), I was successful with Katmai when I installed a) .NET Framework 3.5 and b) windows update.

I also installed Orcas CTP and BizTalk 2006 R2 CTP. However, I did not see the Biztalk projects in VS. I am wondering why. I have to check with Biztalk forum.

Has anyone been able to get reporting services for Katmai running on Longhorn?

Can not INSERT to the second table

Hi, everyone, I write a SP and the first table can be inserted succesfully, but the second fails.
However there are not any error message to occur, just passes it. Anyone can give me a tip?

I suspect it's this:

SELECT DISTINCT
@.Inv_invoiceid,
tblBasket.productID,
tblMovie.mov_description,
tblBasket.quantity,
tblProduct.PRD_Price
FROM tblBasket, tblProduct, tblMovie
WHERE tblBasket.productID=tblProduct.PRD_ProductID

You're not giving it any join criteria.|||Thank your hints, I have added another join criteria as follows but it still does not work correctly, just skips it.

SELECT DISTINCT
@.Inv_invoiceid,
tblBasket.productID,
tblMovie.mov_description,
tblBasket.quantity,
tblProduct.PRD_Price
FROM tblBasket, tblProduct, tblMovie
WHERE tblBasket.productID=tblProduct.PRD_ProductID
AND tblProduct.MOV_movieID=tblMovie.MOV_MovieID

Any suggestions I can get from your guys?|||remove the@. sign at the second line.

hth|||Does the Select query work in Query Analyzer? If the select query works, then add the insert to the beginning of it and see if that works. If that doesn't, it's either because the select query returns no records, there is a syntax error, or some constraint has been violated. QA will give you a hint in any of those cases. Try that.

Also, a more standard syntax for joins is:

SELECT DISTINCT
@.Inv_invoiceid,
tblBasket.productID,
tblMovie.mov_description,
tblBasket.quantity,
tblProduct.PRD_Price
FROM tblBasket b
join tblProduct p
on b.productID = p.PRD_ProductID
join tblMovie m
on p.MOV_movieID = m.MOV_MovieID
|||First, I would like to say I have solved the problem. Thank your guys's hints.
Second, I want to share my experience with your guys.

To upstairs 2 friends:

ndinakar says should "remove the @. sign at the second line.", I have to say this is wrong. Because the parameter @.Inv_invoiceid come from the the first table and it is a variable.

As I have told, the SP runs properly in QA, but it does not insert the data into the table. Paraigh analyse the reasons, "it's either because the select query returns no records, there is a syntax error, or some constraint has been violated." what you said is partly correct. This is really a "syntax error" but QA skips it. I look into it carefully and eventually I find the reason occurs in the tblMovie.mov_description field. In tblmovie, I claim the varchar length 255, but in tblinvoiceline I claim the varchar length is 50. It passes the QA but occurs error in runtime.

I think this is syntax error but QA seems no regard it as an error and skips it. In my opinion, this is a needed improvement aspects in SQL Server.

Can not insert into table that have IDENTITY

[desc] [char] (10) ).
Table two is CREATE TABLE [coba2] (

into coba2. I used this query "insert into coba2 select * from coba".
It show error like this "An explicit value for the identity column in
table 'coba2' can only be specified when a column list is used and

So, does anyone know how to insert all records in table coba into
coba2?
Thank you very much for your help.I have tried this out and the following will work:

SELECT [desc] from coba|||Name the columns for both the INSERT statement as well as the SELECT:

Can not insert input field with length gt 128

I got this problem that really puzzled me. I used a stored procedure to
insert records into SQL. When the field of input string contained more than
128 characters, it gave me this message:
The identifier that starts with 'Today is a nice day..........Good bye'
is too long. Maximum length is 128.
But here I am not sending in an identifier name, I am sending in the actual
input which is more than 128 characters long. The input field in the data
base is defined as varchar(1000).
Any ideas? What is the size on the parameter declaration in the stored procedure? I'll
bet you a shiny new nickel it's VARCHAR(128) or CHAR(128).

Actually, it sounds like the call he is making to the database doesn't
properly encapsulate this string. It seems SQL Server has mistaken the
string for an identifier (otherwise the error would be "string or binary
data would be truncated"). This usually happens when someone uses " instead
of ' for delimiting a string, but there are other possibilities as well.
"pelican", how about showing us the actual code you are using, instead of
vaguely describing it -- then we don't have to guess. I suppose DDL for the
table you are trying to INSERT into wouldn't hurt either (see
http://www.aspfaq.com/5006).|||Good point, probably an embedded ' in the input somewhere that wasn't
properly escaped by the app. Interesting that it would pick 128 as the
cut-off size, however. I would definitely need to see the code for the SP
and the input string.

That is the maximum size for an identifier. I don't think it is an errant
', it just received this string that it thinks is supposed to be a column,
and is saying, WHOA, this column name is bigger than 128, hold on. It could
be 129 or 8000 characters... the same error will get kicked out.|||Thank you all so much! "AB - MVP" is right, once I changed the double quote
(") to single ('), it worked fine! In the stored procedure, the size on the
parameter is varchar(1000). I did not realize that the "" sign will make SQ
L
believe I was passing an identifier instead of the actually content.

Thanks a lot!|||Yeah it's called a "quoted identifier" and can be circumvented by using
"parameterized queries".

Can not get sqlcmd and unable to create peer-to-peer replication.

Hi, Pros,

I am new to SQL server 2005. We have installed SQL server 2005 cluster. I tried to setup peer-to-peer replication with another standard server. Unfortunately, when I creating publication, I got error message : SQL server cound not configure "MyServer" as a Distributor [New publication Wizard] Additional information: An exception occurred whild executing a Transact_SQL statement or batch.

The Server "Myserveris already defined as a Distributor. To reconfigure the server as a Distributor, you must first uninstall the exisitingDistributor. Use the stored procedure sp_dropdistributor, or use the Disable Publishing and Distribution Wizard. Changed database context to 'master'. [Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 14099]

I tried to use sqlcmd and I got another error message:

C:\>sqlcmd

HResult 0x2, Level 16, State 1

Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2].

Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : An error has occurred while establi

shing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failu

re may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not

allow remote connections..

Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : Login timeout expired.

Does anyone have any idea how to get the sqlcmd work?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Vicent,

You should use "sqlcmd -S %VirtualInstanceName%" (replace %VirtualInstanceName% with the virtual server name of your cluster.

For the issue of setting up distributor, have you follow the instruction in your error message?

Hi, Peng,

Thanks for your kind reply. I am so glad your command works. I got another error when I tried to drop distributor from my cluster because when I setup replication the message shows the cluster has been setup as distributor.

I use sqlcmd to drop distributor and get the error message below. Do you have any idea?

C:\>sqlcmd -S myvirtualname
1> sp_dropdistributor 'myvirtualname'
2> GO
HResult 0x1FB2, Level 16, State 5
Error converting data type varchar to bit.
1>

Thanks for your help.

Hi Vincent,

The first parameter of sp_dropdistributor is not server name. Please see this page (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms173516.aspx) for the document. For example, you should say "EXEC sp_dropdistributor" or "EXEC sp_dropdistributor 1".

Hi, Peng,

I tried the command EXEC, it does not work either.

Microsoft Windows [Version 5.2.3790]

C:\Documents and Settings\HCLLCLUS>sqlcmd -S myvirtualname
1> EXEC sp_dropdistributor 'myvirtualname'
2> GO
HResult 0x1FB2, Level 16, State 5
Error converting data type varchar to bit.
1>

Do you know how to fix? Do I need to log on machine instead of virtual name? I wonder how did this distributor setup. Is there any way I can check this?

Thanks,

|||

I need to mention one more thing. I did follow the error message and tried to find Disable Publication and Distributor Wizard. It was not there. It seems the only way left for me is the command line.

Thanks.

|||

It is really my bad. I use the command to drop off distributor.

1> EXEC sp_dropdistributor
2> GO
Msg 21043, Level 16, State 1, Server virtualserver, Procedure sp_dropdistributor,
Line 50
The Distributor is not installed.
1>

It is looks like the ditributor did not installed on the server. However if I tried to configure replication via wizard, the error message shows the distributor was installed.

SQL Server could not configure ‘virtualname’ as a Distributor.

Additional information.

An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch.

[Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo]

The server ‘Virtualname’ is already defined as a Distributor. To reconfigure the server as a Distributor, you must first uninstall the existing Distributor. Use the stored procedure sp_dropdistributor, or use the Disable Publishing and Distribution Wizard. Changed database context to ‘master’. [Microsoft SQL Server Error: 14099]

|||

Could you run the following command against your cluster instance and report the result back?

SELECT srvname FROM master.dbo.sysservers WHERE srvstatus & 8 <> 0

If you get any row back, it means that your server is already defined as distributor.

Hi, Peng,

I am glad to tell you. I have resolved this problem. Actually, there was a security problem when I set up replication. I went to Local Security Settings >User Rights Assignment >Lock pages in memory, I put adminstrator user in it and I was able to setup replication. Thanks for your instruction.

I have an another problem. I did not realize that it need SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition to setup P2P replication. I had bought upraged license. However, I do not know how to upgrade SQL server 2005 standard to Enterprise edition. Does anyone know how? Thank you.
