Can not install Reporting Services, Help!

Hi,
I'm running Windows XP and SQL Server Developer Edition (sp3) and I'm trying
to install the MS SQL Server Reporting Services that is in the MSDN of April
2004. I also have Visual studio.net installed.
So when I run the CD all goes well until you specify the database for the
reporting server and then I get the following error:
"This edition of the Report Server Database is not supported on the edition
of SQL Server 2000 you have chosen. Please choose on that matches the
requirements."
MS Requirements are SQL 2000 Standard, SQL 2000 Enterprise, and SQL 2000
Developer edition.
What does this mean, any comments or feedback will be greately appreciated.

Is Katmai supported on Longhorn? I tried both x64 and x86 (development edition) on Longhorn x64 and x86 versions respectively. The workstation components get errors and rolled back. Any fix?

I want to try Lognhorn, Katmai, Orcas, Biztalk R2 (on 32-bit platform first) and then x64. Can someone recommend what stacks are tried/supported ?

Actually, I postponed x64 tests.

On x86 Longhorn (w2k8), I was successful with Katmai when I installed a) .NET Framework 3.5 and b) windows update.

I also installed Orcas CTP and BizTalk 2006 R2 CTP. However, I did not see the Biztalk projects in VS. I am wondering why. I have to check with Biztalk forum.

Can not connect to SQL Server 2005 Developer edition remotely

I setup a SQL Server 2005 Developer edition, which is bundled with Visual Studio .NET 2005 Professional edition. The SQL Server authentication mode is enabled in this database server. But when I try to connect it from another PC using SQL Server authentication, it failed. Is it a limitation on the developer edition?

I still can't login remotely to the server, the error message is:

Cannot connect to 137.xxx.xx.xx\STD2005
error: 26 - Error Locating Sever/Instance Specified

I setup a MSSQL Server 2005 Standard edition on a remote computer 137.xxx.xx.xx (I'm sure the network has no any problem, since this remote computer has a SQL2000 server that I can use the Enterprise Manager in my PC to connect to it), and the named instance called STD2005. I try to connect to it through the Management Studio in my PC, using the sa account and one acccount that I created before, both not work. Any idea?

so you are usinga named instance. I assume you didn′t put the named instance on the defaulport, which is as a default used to connect to a sql server instance. If the named instances has another port you have to specify it with the syntax:

Servername\InstanceName,Portnumber

In SQL 2005 Developer Edition TCP\IP is disabled by default. You can go to Server Configuration and enable it. I hope that helps.

Can not connect to SQL server

I am using SQL server 2005 express edition. I have instaled the managment studio, so I can create the databases and login. Than after it I have changed from Windows authentication to SQL server authentication. So I opened the VWD on another client pc and I tried to connect to specified database, but I get the error COULD NOT CONNECT TO SQL SERVER, check if the server allow the remote connections.

I have chenked it and it is configured to allow remote connections. Why this happens ?? I had never these problems when I used the sql server 2005 beta version. The client pc and this sql server have connections so there is no problem with network connection at all.

Any suggestions ??

PS: I also tried using syntax:

Server name: myserver\SQLEXPRESS (instance)

This might occur also if you didnt specify the correct username/password for the SQL authentication method.

Make sure that the database contain that user and is already mapped to the db.

Actually I found that problem was DISABLED TCP / IP on the SQL server. I have enabled it and now it work fine. When installing the SQL server express the tcp/ip is disabled so it will not respond on the request for other pc`s.

Since we are using compact edition, we are hoping we can write some common module with the same code that could works on both mobile device and pc platform. I noticed the reference is the same, System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll 3.0.

Another question is, we already have a module for SQLCE2.0, with .net CF1.0. Now, we will start to use compact edition, should we just update on the 1.0 one, or we have to write a different one based on .net CF2.0? Can I use compact edition in CF1.0 dll?

The code in terms of SQL CE is exactly the same, apart from the connection string. So yes, you can easily share code, you will have to use 2 different solutions to target the different platforms, however. SQL CE/SQL Mobile is only available in Visual Studio 2005.

Can I use SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition for ADO.net 2?

Currently, our client is asking if they could buy the SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition.

Is it ok? I'm afraid that the SP we made using CLR and any other functionality might not work.

We are suggesting our client to use the SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition instead. But for them to save money, can they use the Workgroup Edition instead?

Yes, sure this is possible. Due to the lack of knowing of what your application concists, you should doublecheck the feature comparison on your own:

Management Studio and SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio.
If I purchase SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition will it have these two tools,
and will I be able to work with my production SQL database? Just for
clarification, I use the Business Intelligence studio to drop my existing
tables, and I migrate from locally-stored ACCESS databases to my production

Yes, this should be fine. The licensing might be a bit of a gray area
though; but, I think that the ISP license should cover the production
deployment.

Can I use SQL Developer edition with VWD 2005 Express?

Can I use sql developer 2000 instead of using the sql 2005 with the VWD 2005 Express. If so, how do I configure the asp 2.0 to utilize it for security? When I administer the webite it's look for the sql express.

There should be no problems with security as the models are the same, however I believe VWD uses some special features of express that are not available in SQLDE. In addition most of the quickstart samples and starter apps assume a connection string of .\sqlexpress, you need to search for this in the web.config files and other places in the projects to replace it with either . or the named of the instance you installed DE as.

Can I use Merge Replication via Developer Edition to Cluster?

I am a DBA in one IT group and we do our development work on the developer
edition of SQL Server 2005 and migrate everything to our SQL Server 2005
cluster for production.
We want to use merge replication between the Developer Edition and the
Cluster but I am being told by the DBA on the cluster that:
1. The developer edition of SQL Server does not have the same features as
the enterprise edition; that the enterprise edition is required for
implementing the SQL Cluster as this is not featured in the developers
edition.
This statement seems to conflict with what Microsoft has posted online at ...

You need a new dba.
1) The developer edition supports all of the features of the Enterprise
Edition. There may be a limitation on the number of subscribers you can have
to a publication, but if there is it is not documented.
2) I am not sure about this one, but I don't think it is correct. You would
need to post to the reporting services group for more information.
3) This might be a licensing issue. The developer edition is intended for
development only. You will be able to replicate to a cluster running SQL
Server 2005 EE. When it comes to licensing issues you may have to
demonstrate licensing for auditors, but CSS will help you with problems you
may encounter while running this.
Keep in mind the developer edition is for development, not production.
Should you be replicating to production it should be a one time or
occasional occurrence as part of your development process, and not part of a
production topology.
That been said I have set up replication to development environments from a
production environment many times. I did not configure the licensing but I
am confident it was legit.

Can I use data drive subscription on a remote sql standard version

I would like to upgrade our report server to sql 2000 enterprise
edition to be able to use the DD subscriptions.. if I do do upgrade the
server, will I be able to connect to a sql server on another box with
the standard version and continue to use DD subscriptions on that
remote server.
or is there another way to get around this issue by way of stored

Can I install another instance of SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition and use another 4 Gb Physical Memory for that instance?

We have 6 GB physical memory availabe on our 64- bit server.

I found in other places in books online that I can use as much memory as installed on the server and that I do not need to use AWE on the 64 bit server.

Is that true?

Yes if its a 64 bit then need not use AWE settings.

Check on SQL Server properties about the memory settings to see how much is allocated, also run SYSMON to capture the resource usage.

To actualy transfer the database you'll need the SQL Server Management Studio Express tool, -UNLESS- the server on which you will host it has support for mdf files, in which case you can just upload it with an FTP client or whatever tool your host supports.|||

You database mdf file is just a file and you can use FTP client to do this, the only problem is that some server does not allow to put big files to server so it is possible that if your database is too big your transfer can crash, but with most cases it should be OK, but it will take some time. The best solution could be to download database structure, check if everything work and next put data in it.
