can not install MSDE

Hi
I have installed .net framework 1.1 and .net web matrix from 'sams teach yourself asp.net' CD. I installed MSDE from the same CD, its not giving any error, but at the end it does not promt to restart the computer, even after restarting I can not see the MSDE icon in the system tray, also I dont see MSDE in the add/remove programs in control panel.I installed sql2kdesksp3.exe from www.asp.net/msde/, but the same thing repeats.

1. Shld I install the sql2kasp3.exe(Analysis services companents) and sql2ksp3.exe(Databasre components) also?

I am new to asp,It will be helpful if somebody can tell me how to install MSDE.

ThanksHere are step-by-step instructions. Try going over them again in case the machine didn't install it properly:

http://www.asp.net/webmatrix/guidedtour/Appendices/installMsde.aspx|||Hii

I Installed MSDE via command line as given in tht site and there was no error but dint get tht MSDE icon in system tray.
I tried to install MSDE via batch file, there was no error, but when started the MSDE service, I couldnt see the "MSSQLSERVER", there is only MSSQLServiceASHelper, when clicked on it it gives the error as

"could not start the MSSQLServerADHelper service on Local Computer
eror2:The system cannot find the file specified"

Now wht shld I do??Can I download the missing file separately.I installed from the cd again and the same repeated.plzz tell me whtt I shld do now.
Thank You|||Yeah, follow the directions here to reinstall:
http://www.asp.net/msde/default.aspx?tabindex=0&tabid=1|||Hi
I tried by installing from tht site, to install it again it takes another 8 to 10hours as I use dialup connection.Cant I download the missing file separately?|||The files you point to are Service Pack 3 files for SQL Server 2000. You need this file to patch MSDE with SP3: Sql2kdesksp3.exe

Check out the SQL Server and MSDE Service Pack 3a update page:
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/downloads/2000/SP3.asp

You may be able to order on CD, or at least download the correct file.|||Thanks a lot for answering me, I am downloading it again from the given site, if the same problem repeates then I'll buy the Cd.
Does SQL server 2000 and MSDE work the same way?

Thank you.|||Pretty much. MSDE doesn't have all the high-end features that SQL Server has, nor does it have a graphical interface designer like Query Analyzer or Enterprise Manager.

Can not create a database in VS.Net using SQL

I am taking a course in ASP.Net at Finger Lakes Community
College. I am trying to create a database in VS.Net using
SQL. In the computer lab we have the class in I can
create a database in VS.Net using SQL. In the open lab
and at home on my P.C. I have VS.Net and SQL Server 2000
loaded. Every is the same BUT I cannot create a database
using SQL on my P.C. or in the open lab. I am set up as
the administrator and have all the rights I need to creat
a database. The permissions are the same from one lab to
the other and on my P.C. and the server is on. My System
Admininstrator and Teacher are just as confused as I am.
We need to resolve this issue before the start of the
fall semester. Does anyne have an idea on why this is
happening?Please be a bit more clear as to what is happening. How are you trying to
create the database? What error are you getting when you try?

go to Server Explorer and right click on Data Connections
and select Create a new SQL Database. In the window where
you enter the server I type in the local server's name
and then type in the name of the database I want to
create. It may take a moment or two but I'll get an error
message stating "Can not create a databse on this

e able to create a database.

Can not access SQL database for Website security settings

I'm using Visual Studio 2005 (8.0.50727.42) and going into the menu option Website > ASP.Net Configuration, access the security tab and all I get is an error message stating that there is a problem with the selected data store "Unable to Connect to the SQL Server Database"

I have SQL Server 2005 (Express Edition). I have created a database "NetDev" with the right connection, etc.

I can use the SQL server fine for my Windows applications, but somehow this ASp.Net Configuration tool is not making any sense.

I also used the aspnet_regsql command from framework 2.0 to create a DataBase to no avail.

Does anyone out there knows if there is a bug with this tool?

Responding to my own question.

I finally reinstalled everything from scratch, IIS first, and then Visual Studio and my problem went away. It obviously had some corruption as I havce deleted and recreated many apps I may have induced some problems. Also the NET Service had to be added to the APP-Data dir with write permissions (this may have been the real cause).

Can my ASP.NET dev workstation see remote SQL server?

I would like to develop my ASP.NET application against a SQL 2000 database
residing on another server, rather than against the SQL server installed
locally. We're using Windows integrated security. When I'm using Visual
Studio the ASP.NET user belongs to my XP machine's local domain, which is
not recognized by the remote SQL server as belong to its domain. It is
possible to set up the SQL Server, my local XP machine, or my web.config
file so that when I develop an app in Visual Studio (Debug -> Start), I can
access the remote SQL database?
Thanks !You should be able to register the server using the format domain\username
and then develop against it. NOTE that, by default, the method of security
is windows and not mixed, but that sounds fine in your case.

In order to have ASP.NET connect to the database server, you must
configure ASP.NET to run as a domain account. I believe it is the
machine.config file that you will need to modify on Windows XP to change
what user ASP.NET runs as. It is different on different OSes. The good
thing is that with Windows 2003 you configure it directly in IIS and
each application can run under a different user.
Aaron Weiker
http://blogs.sqladvice.com/aweiker
http://aaronweiker.com/|||You certainly can
A couple of ways to do it (one OR the other)
1) Edit machine.config (C:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v.....\Config) and
change the userName / password of the <processModel ..> element as described
in the same file
That way you can run the ASP.NET working process on the identity of a domain
account that may be allowed access to the SQL Server
2) For your Web application (on the IIS console), replace the default
anonymous user (IUSR_xxxxxxx) with a domain user / password and allow access
to that user in the SQL Server. You should also set <identity
impersonate=true> in your Web.config

On my local PC, I edit the userName element replacing the value with
DOMAIN\USERNAME
This domain user has been granted login on the remote SQL server, has been
granted dbaccess, and has been added as a member of a role which can access
the relevant tables.When I try to run my ASP.NET page, I get the following
error:
Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL
Server connection
I don't know what our network admin has done when setting up my PC, which
has XP Pro on it; he is used to Win2K. He knows only a little more than I do
about Windows authentication, which has me worried :-) Why does the error
message have 'null' for the username? Because SQL does not recognize it and
so refuses to repeat the name?
Thanks

user. We need to be able to impersonate when we authenticate to SQL using
your Windows NT credentials.
Typical client server environment:
Scenario 1:
Client --> SQL
If this fails, then it may be a problem with the communication between the
client and the Domain Controller. You can make network traces from the
client and /or enable Kerberos logging to verify if this is the case. This
may occur when using sockets, but not with Named Pipes connections.
Scenario 2:
Web Server/SQL Environment
Client-->IIS-->SQL.
If your scenario looks like the Scenario 2 (Web Server/SQL Environment),
then this scenario is more complicated to configure.
The middle machine (IIS) must be trusted for Security Delegation. And the
Domain Admin needs to set the spn for SQL Server.
The client machine must use TCP/IP and authenticate via Kerberos
authentication. If it uses NTLM, then this will fail with "Login failed
for user 'null'".
This article goes over various scenarios:

Can i use the OleDbDataAdapter with SQL SERVER EXPRESS

i have a large amount of code to convert (over 100 asp ver. 2 pages)

Microsoft Access to SQL SERVER EXPRESS

the original code uses the OleDbDataAdapter

example: =========

Dim Connect As OleDbConnection = New OleDbConnection
Dim MyAdapter As OleDbDataAdapter = New OleDbDataAdapter
Dim MyCmdbuilder As OleDbCommandBuilder
Dim Mydataset As DataSet = New DataSet
Dim SelectStatement as string = "select * from tbl_weblog"
Dim connectString as string = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data Source=e:\web\users\data\abc.mdb"

Connect.ConnectionString = ConnectString
MyAdapter.SelectCommand = new OleDbCommand(SelectStatement, Connect)
MyCmdbuilder = New OleDbCommandBuilder(MyAdapter)
MyAdapter.Fill(Mydataset,"tbl_weblog")

================

Can i just change the connection string to point to the new database, assuming the field names and structures are all the same.

Yes, you can, but it's not optimal. The native SqlClient is much better. You could just replace every occurance (search & replace in VS) of "OleDb" with "Sql", and take it from there.

|||

Thanks for the reply

Are there big differences between the Oledb and SQL Client?

You say "much better", in what areas?

reliabilty, scalability or performance?

Does anyone know where i could research this further?

|||

Sorry for being too brief...

The performance difference can be huge in some occasions, and you get nice features such as named parameters.

Can i use sql reporting svc with asp3.0 classic

Hi ,
I have to develop an application developed in asp 3.0 and now was wondering
if i could use MSSQL reproting services instead of using Crystal Reports.?
i know for design u need to have .net framework but can i integrate it while
using asp 3.0 and IIS 5.0
Thanks.
--KingIf you can figure out what the URL would be for a report, you can put
the report in an iframe, or even it's own page (i.e. a new window). Try
looking through the Reporting Services documentation for "URL Access."
Once you get the format of the URL down, it's pretty easy to customize
how the page loads. I do this to redirect users directly to PDFs of
reports.

That was helpful. Another question i have is if want the reports be
generated whenever the user clicks on the link ( i mean i wanna see latest
report everytime is it possible to do.
Also how can i implement security so that only authorized people can see
those reports . I am thinking of providing a login page and based on login
and password a person is able to see a particular report. so on the asp side
i can do it by authenticating the user against a table in database but what
about rs side .
If a person knows the url of the report can he see the report without login
?
THanks

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the security stuff. Every where
I've used RS has been in a domain environment where everyone has access
to all of the reports. You may want to search on google and the
newsgroup for information about implementing your own security.

Can I use SQL Express database inside full blown SQL 2005?

Hi,
I have SQLExpress database under App_Data folder of my ASP.NET application, can I just deploy this to production (where SQL 2005) is running and it'll still work?
Probably. You may have to deal with some user mapping and permissions issue because your production system will have different logins than your SQL Express instance.

Can I use SQL Developer edition with VWD 2005 Express?

Can I use sql developer 2000 instead of using the sql 2005 with the VWD 2005 Express. If so, how do I configure the asp 2.0 to utilize it for security? When I administer the webite it's look for the sql express.

Help.

There should be no problems with security as the models are the same, however I believe VWD uses some special features of express that are not available in SQLDE. In addition most of the quickstart samples and starter apps assume a connection string of .\sqlexpress, you need to search for this in the web.config files and other places in the projects to replace it with either . or the named of the instance you installed DE as.

Can I Use ADOMD or AMO In ASP.NET 2.0

Hi~

I know some function can be used in debug mode,like MsgBox()...,in ASP.NET 2.0.

But I don't know that Can ADOMD or AMO be used in ASP.NET 2.0.

Could someone tell me?

thanks~

Server: SQL Server 2005

OS: Windows 2003

Yes you can use both ADOMD and AMO from ASP.NET. The main "trick" is to get the code executing as a user that has the approriate rights to access the required SSAS objects. Setting up your application pool up to run under a domain account that is in appropriate SSAS roles is one way of getting this to work.

Can i save SQL Server 2005 Db as SS 2000?

Hi,

on my dev-machine i am running SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition.
Now i have to do a project for a client who is on a server with ASP.NET 1.1 and SQL Server 2000.

Is there a way i can build his database in 2005 and export or whatever it as SQL Server 2000?

I don't really like the idea of installing 2000 and 2005 side by side on the same machine.

Thank you very much in advance.

Tjerk HeringaIt depends on what features you use. If you stick to 2000 style, you'd prbly be able to develop on 2005 and move it to 2000.

Can I run SQL2000Dev and SQL2005Exp Side By Side?

Have an asp.net 2.0 application that I want to enable a "demo" version of with the required tables. The tables currently exist in SQL2000Dev on a server. I have installed SQLEXP on a clean box and restored the database to it no problem. Now I want to install SQLEXP on my dev pc side-by-side with the SQLDEV instance. I could not find any reference to this ability other than some warnings about the pre-release versions. Can it be done safely?

Thanks, Paul

Absolutly. Install them to different instance names and it will work just fine.

Can I roll back certain query(insert/update) execution in one page if query (insert/update

Can I roll back certain query(insert/update) execution in one page if query (insert/update) in other page execution fails in asp.net.( I am using sqlserver 2000 as back end)

scenario

In a webpage1, I have insert query into master table and Page2 I have insert query to store data in sub table.

I need to rollback the insert command execution for sub table ,if insert command to master table in web page1 is failed. (Query in webpage2 executes first, then only the query in webpage1) Can I use System. Transaction to solve this?

Thanks in advance

Hi, sreejith

Yes, we can make the trasaction pass from one page to the other. However, a pending trasaction may lock the table for a long time.

In a multi-user environment, this would prevent the other users from reading/writing data. So, I suggest you let the user input data in both 2 pages. Then, after the second page is finished, call the 2 inserts together. This will make your application better.

HTH. If this does not answer you question, please feel free to mark it as Not Answered and post your reply. Thanks!

Can we keep a database connection open in one page, used in some other page .

wont it show error ?

can u provide some link or code samples for above mentioned transaction.

Can I List the Integration Services Packages on my page?

I want to build an administration consoloe with asp.net

Can I list the packages , can I delete them?Yes, you can do this through the service interface on the Application Object.
Something like this:
Dim app As Application = New Application()
Dim pInfos As PackageInfos = app.GetPackageInfos("\\","yourserver",Nothing,Nothing)
For Each pInfo As PackageInfo In pInfos
Console.WriteLine("Name: {0}", pInfo.Name)
Next

Which will give you all the packages on the SQL Server instance.
For the packages on the IS Server, do something like this:
static void Main(string[] args)
{
Application app = new Application();
PackageInfos pInfos = app.GetDtsServerPackageInfos(@."File System", "yourserver");
foreach (PackageInfo pinfo in pInfos)
Console.WriteLine(pinfo.Folder + " " + pinfo.Description);
}

Can I install sql server 2000 and sql server 2005 in the same machine

Hello ,

i am an asp.net developer my pc has sql server 2005 already and now my company use sql server 2000

I think 2005 is very easy to use but some of 2000 that I don't know

so can I install 2000 in the same machine with 2005 ?

thanks for your kindness.

Kate

You definetely can. Go ahead and have fun.

|||By the way, if you need to connect to a 2000 DB, you dont need to install 2000 on your local machine. You can still connect to the company DB through your 2005 Management Studio. Just register the server and you can run your usual queries.|||

OK I will do it tonight, thanks for your help.Stick out tongue
